Chiefs' Mahomes: 'We're going to be really special'

After trading Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins, the Kansas City Chiefs will turn to Patrick Mahomes as their starting quarterback in 2018 and beyond.

Mahomes - who the Chiefs selected No. 10 overall in the 2017 draft - was seen as a boom or bust prospect, but he'll have a number of high-profile weapons to help him succeed in his first year as a starter, including Kareem Hunt, Travis Kelce, Sammy Watkins, and Tyreek Hill.

The strong-armed passer has high expectations for his team and its offense.

"We're going to be really special," Mahomes told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero Wednesday. "It makes my job a lot easier. I just gotta get the ball in their hands and they make plays.

"I can throw a two-yard little hitch route, and they can score an 80-yard touchdown anytime."

With the plethora of weapons at Mahomes' disposal, it may be difficult for all of his skill position players to stuff the stat sheet week in and week out. According to the quarterback, though, there are no signs of selfishness.

"Yeah (there's a lot of guys to keep happy), but at the same time we have a lot of guys that really just want to win," Mahomes said. "And I feel like that's the biggest thing. When you have a lot of talented guys like that, that want to work hard, that's when you have a special group of people."

Mahomes made one start as a rookie in 2017, completing 22 of 35 passes for 284 yards and an interception in the Chiefs' Week 17 victory over the Denver Broncos.
