MRI confirms torn ACL for Garoppolo
Jimmy Garoppolo's MRI Monday revealed what the San Francisco 49ers had originally feared, as the team confirmed he suffered a torn left ACL against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
Garoppolo will miss the remainder of the 2018 season.
The quarterback went down late in the fourth quarter after cutting back into the field instead of stepping out of bounds at the end of a quarterback scramble. He also stepped into a heavy hit upon making the cut.
C.J. Beathard is currently the only other quarterback on San Francisco's roster, so he'll presumably start in Garoppolo's absence barring a trade or free-agent signing. The team will reportedly bring free agent Tom Savage in for a workout, a source told ESPN's Jordan Schultz.
The injury is a huge blow to a once-promising 49ers season. The team currently sits at 1-2 after a 38-27 loss to the Chiefs.
Garoppolo's first full season with the 49ers finishes with 718 passing yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions.
