The 28-year-old also suffered a concussion in Week 1 but was cleared to play the following game.
New England is thin at running back after Jeremy Hill tore his ACL in Week 1 and with Sony Michel dealing with a knee injury. The team has turned to James White and Cordarrelle Patterson to control the backfield in recent games.
Burkhead has accumulated 86 rushing yards and 31 receiving yards in his three appearances this season.
