The Washington Redskins are auditioning a number of quarterbacks, including EJ Manuel, T.J. Yates, and Mark Sanchez, after Alex Smith suffered a broken tibia and fibula Sunday, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Colt McCoy will operate as the Redskins' starter while the team looks for his backup. McCoy went 6-of-12 for 54 yards and a touchdown, adding 35 yards on five carries during Sunday's 23-21 loss to the Houston Texans.

Manuel last played for the Oakland Raiders and was released in September. The 28-year-old is best known for his tenure with the Buffalo Bills (2013-16) after being selected in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Yates made his third stint with the Houston Texans in 2017 and started three games, completing 48.5 percent of his passes for 523 yards, four touchdowns, and three interceptions.

Sanchez signed with the Chicago Bears in 2017 but did not play. He was suspended four games for violating the NFL's performance-enhancing drug policy in April.
