Alex Rodriguez tried to convince a young Patrick Mahomes to give up football and pursue a career in baseball. Fortunately for the Kansas City Chiefs, Mahomes ignored his advice.

Rodriguez, who played alongside Mahomes' father, Pat Mahomes Sr., with the Texas Rangers, shared the conversation he had with the quarterback in an interview with Omnisport.

"I said, 'Now listen to me now. If you don't hear one thing that I ever tell you, you better listen to this," the 14-time MLB All-Star recalled. "'There is no money, there is no future, there is no history in football. You have to play baseball.'

"Well, he reminded me of that recently and, boy, am I glad he did not listen to me."

Mahomes, a former high school pitcher, was selected in the 37th round of the 2014 MLB Draft by the Detroit Tigers but chose to play college football at Texas Tech instead.

"After a lot of talk with my parents and a lot of praying, I knew the best decision for me was to go to college and get to experience college football and baseball," Mahomes told ESPN in 2016. "It was the best decision for me and my future. The biggest advantage is getting all the memories that college gives you and the life of being a college kid."

Mahomes leads the NFL in passing yards (3,628) and touchdowns (37) and his 117.9 passer rating is second only to New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees (126.9).
