Report: McCarthy high on Jets' coaching wishlist
Former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy is "very high" on the New York Jets' list of potential candidates to replace incumbent Todd Bowles, sources told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.
Bowles is widely expected to be fired at the end of the season. He owns a 24-37 record entering New York's Week 15 affair with the Houston Texans as he winds down his fourth campaign.
McCarthy was dismissed by Green Bay on Dec. 2 after a 4-7 start to the season. The 55-year-old was in his 13th campaign with the Packers and led them to a championship in Super Bowl XLV.
The Jets are expected to favor an offensive-minded coach if they part with Bowles and are prepared to go "big-game hunting," Garafolo reports. McCarthy would fit those desires, even though he drew criticism over his final few seasons in Green Bay for letting his offense grow stale.
Overall, McCarthy compiled a 125-77-2 record with the Packers. He made the playoffs - a destination the Jets haven't visited since the 2010 season - nine times in 12 full years.
