It was reported Smith was fighting through a career-threatening infection in his right leg after breaking his fibula and tibia during a Nov. 18 contest against the Houston Texans.

Sources are optimistic about the 34-year-old's ability to return to the NFL, according to Schefter and Keim.

If Smith is unable to play beyond this season it would have dire consequences for the team's salary cap. Washington would absorb his $20.4-million and $21.4-million cap hits for the 2020 and 2021 campaigns, respectively, before a potential out clause could be activated.

Smith was named to consecutive Pro Bowls, earning the third selection of his career in 2017. The veteran quarterback will be entering his 15th season next fall if he's able to return to action.
