New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees has set another benchmark statistic - this time, without even stepping onto the field.

By sitting for the regular-season finale with the Saints already securing the No. 1 seed, Brees' 74.4 percent completion percentage is locked in as the new single-season record, according to ESPN's Mike Triplett.

The MVP candidate breaks his own previous record of 72.0 percent, which he set last season. Brees now owns five of the top 11 single-season completion marks in NFL history.

Teddy Bridgewater will start Week 17 as Brees rests for a run at a second Super Bowl title.

Earlier this season, Brees passed Peyton Manning to become the NFL's all-time leader in passing yards.
