Report: Broncos hire Fangio as head coach, Kubiak to become OC
The Denver Broncos hired Vic Fangio as their new head coach Wednesday, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter and Dan Graziano. The deal runs for four years and includes a fifth-year team option.
This will be Fangio's first head coaching job in either the NFL or the college level. He replaces Vance Joseph, who went 11-21 over the past two seasons with the Broncos.
Former Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak will become the team's offensive coordinator, as first reported by Schefter and later confirmed by Mike Klis of 9News. He was the Broncos head coach from 2015-16 and served as a senior personnel advisor the past two campaigns.
The 60-year-old Fangio spent the past four seasons as the defensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears and led the league's No. 1 scoring defense in 2018. His unit also ranked first in rushing yards allowed per game and seventh in passing yards allowed.
Fangio's previous experience includes four years as the defensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers, and prior stints with the Baltimore Ravens, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Carolina Panthers, and New Orleans Saints.
The Broncos haven't made the playoffs since winning Super Bowl 50 under Kubiak. They went just 6-10 in 2018 with the league's 13th-ranked defense and 24th-ranked offense.
