The Cowboys have a former Dallas quarterback as head coach and could have another as their offensive coordinator.

Kellen Moore, a backup quarterback for the Cowboys from 2015-17, is a leading candidate to be promoted from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. Head coach Jason Garrett would be more involved in the play-calling, ESPN's Chris Mortensen adds.

The Cowboys parted ways with Scott Linehan, their offensive coordinator of the past four years, on Friday.

It would be a precipitous rise for Moore. He was a post-draft signing by the Detroit Lions in 2012 but never played for the team in three seasons. He played in three total games for the Cowboys before transitioning to coaching this year.

The Cowboys had the league's 22nd-ranked offense in 2018, averaging 21.2 points per game.
