McVay made Kingsbury believe he'd lose No. 1 pick with tampering prank

Sean McVay doesn't need April Fools' Day to be a prankster.

The Los Angeles Rams head coach shared the story of his recent prank on Kliff Kingsbury - which caused the new Arizona Cardinals head coach to believe he'd lose draft picks - during an appearance on ESPN's "The Adam Schefter Podcast."

McVay said his scheme was executed at a recent dinner with Kingsbury and Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Kingsbury previously coached the quarterback at Texas Tech.

"We have a mutual friend that I put his name in my phone as (NFL commissioner) Roger Goodell," McVay told Schefter. "I had this friend send me a text saying, 'I can't believe you're at dinner with Kingsbury and Mahomes. You know better than this. This is tampering. You're both losing picks.'

"I showed Kliff the text, and he saw a ghost. I said, 'You better call (Cardinals general manager) Steve Keim right away.' He said, 'I thought I was going to lose the No. 1 overall pick.'"

McVay added that he couldn't let the prank continue for "too long," and that Kingsbury later promised him, "I'm getting you back, man."
