The Dallas Cowboys and franchise-tagged defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence are both optimistic that an agreement for a new contract will be reached soon, a league source told ProFootballTalk's Michael David Smith.

Dallas admitted last month that negotiations with Lawrence were at an impasse after it tagged the pass-rusher for a second straight season at a one-year cost of $20.5 million. But the two parties have resumed negotiations and are making progress, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo.

Lawrence, who racked up double-digit sacks in each of the last two seasons, reportedly upped his asking price recently. He's believed to be seeking an average annual salary of $22.5 million, though it appears his position may have softened.

Khalil Mack, who makes $23.5 million per year, is the only defensive player with an annual salary higher than Lawrence's reported ask. Mack and Aaron Donald are the only two who take home more than $20 million yearly.

Lawrence, 26, is apparently postponing shoulder surgery and won't report to team activities until a long-term agreement has been inked.
