Has China's Economic Growth Been Greatly Overstated?

I visited Chongqing in 1994, and recall a muddy, drab city full of crumbling grey cement buildings, with lots of poor people carrying heavy loads on their backs. But now interior cities like Chongqing look quite affluent.
