Washington Redskins legend Joe Theismann, who wore No. 7 throughout his 12 seasons with the team, says he isn't opposed to first-round draft pick Dwayne Haskins wearing the same number.

Haskins sported the No. 7 throughout his time at Ohio State.

"I'm anxious to sit down and talk to Dwayne about that," Theismann said on "Redskins Talk," according to NBC Sports' Michelle Martinelli.

"I'm not opposed to it. I'm not saying yes yet, but I really want to sit down and talk to the young man and get a chance to meet him. I know he's reached out and said he wants to ask me, so as early as I can get back into town and be able to set up an opportunity when he gets into town to be able to sit down and talk to him about it."

Theismann welcomed Haskins to the Redskins with a tweet minutes after the 21-year-old was drafted with the 15th overall pick, but he wants to know more about the young quarterback before he wears a number that has been unofficially retired.

Dwayne, welcome to the family. From one #7 to another.

"It's what's inside the jersey that makes a big difference," Theismann said. "I've been very honored to have the Washington Redskins not have it issued to anyone over 30-plus years, and this is the first (No.) 7 that we've had come along, I think.

"So I really wanna sit down and have a visit with him and talk to him about it and then we'll sort of decide going forward."

Theismann led the Redskins to a Super Bowl championship during the 1982 season. The two-time Pro Bowler is the franchise leader in passing yards and was the NFL's MVP in 1983.

Head coach Jay Gruden said Haskins has the opportunity to compete for the starting quarterback position against Colt McCoy and Case Keenum in training camp.
