The U.S. Roman Catholic Church says allegations of child sex abuse by clerics more than doubled in its latest 12-month reporting period. In the same period, its spending on compensation and child protection surged above $300 million, twice the amount four years earlier. The report released Friday says over 1,400 allegations of abuse were received from July 2017 through June 2018. That was up from nearly 700 allegations in the previous year.
