Barring an injury to Jared Goff, Blake Bortles understands he'll spend the 2019 season as the backup.

The former Jacksonville Jaguar is embracing his role with the Los Angeles Rams, but still expects to be a starter somewhere in the near future.

"It's a weird thing to kind of balance in your head," Bortles said, according to Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times. "I have a role. I'm here to back Jared and do whatever I can to help him out. And if I get an opportunity, I've got to make sure we don't miss a beat offensively and we continue to roll.

"And at the same time, I also expect to be a starter in this league again, and I know it's not going to be here in L.A."

Following an up-and-down tenure, the 26-year-old was released by Jacksonville five years after being selected No. 4 overall. The Rams signed him to a one-year deal in March.

Bortles believes Los Angeles is an ideal landing spot to revitalize his career and came away impressed with head coach Sean McVay during organized team activities.

"Seeing how (McVay) coaches, how all the other coaches coach and how the guys are receptive and take it," he said. "I've never seen anything like it."
