On July 15, 1946, thousands of Stelco steelworkers walked off the job, pressing for higher wages, a 40-hour work week and a requirement by the company to regularly deduct dues on behalf of their union, the United Steelworkers of America, Local 1005. The bitter strike lasted for 81 days.
