Los Angeles Chargers general manager Tom Telesco praised Melvin Gordon's talents on the team's opening day of training camp but said the team is willing to continue without the running back if necessary.

"I'm not naive: I know we're better with Melvin Gordon," Telesco said Wednesday, according to ESPN's Eric Williams. "But we've got a strong group of guys that are here, and it's their time to work and get ready to go."

Gordon, 26, is reportedly holding out from Chargers training camp in hopes of securing a long-term extension. It was reported Monday, however, that the team is "dug in" on its current offer.

Running backs Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson are expected to see increased roles in Gordon's absence. Ekler averaged 5.2 yards per carry last season, amassing 958 yards from scrimmage with six touchdowns. The Chargers also went 4-0 in the games Gordon missed last year.

Gordon can reportedly be fined up to $40,000 per missed day of camp.
