New York Giants receiver Golden Tate is facing a four-game suspension for violating the league's performance-enhancing substance policy, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Tate's appeal of the suspension is currently scheduled for the first week of August, Schefter adds.

The 10-year veteran released a statement Saturday morning in which he attributed the incident to a treatment prescribed to him for fertility planning.

It's been a brutal start to training camp for the Giants, as they've already lost receiver Corey Coleman for the year to a torn ACL. Fellow wideout Sterling Shepard has been sidelined with a fractured thumb, and rookie receiver Darius Slayton is nursing an ailing hamstring.

The Giants are down to Cody Latimer, Russell Shepard, Bennie Fowler, Alonzo Russell, and rookie Reggie White at the position. The team is expected to hold tryouts for free-agent receivers.

After trading away star wideout Odell Beckham Jr. this offseason, the Giants signed Tate to a four-year, $37.5-million contract. With the suspension, he stands to lose $1.8 million in salary, according to Spotrac.
