Fangio not pleased with Lock's performance: 'I was hoping for more'

Although Thursday's Hall of Fame Game represented the first NFL contest of Drew Lock's career, the Denver Broncos rookie quarterback won't look back at his debut too fondly.

In the seven drives he was under center, the Missouri product completed 7-of-12 passes for just 34 yards and saw the offense punt five times. Head coach Vic Fangio didn't sugarcoat things when talking about Lock's performance after the game.

"I was hoping for more, but not surprised," Fangio told reporters, as per Jeremy Bergman of NFL.com. "He's still got a lot of work to do. Thought his accuracy wasn't clean all the time, along with his reads. But you know, it's to be expected. We've got four more games. We've got to get him ready, more ready than he is right now."

Lock, who was taken in the second round of the 2019 draft, agreed with Fangio's assessment but pointed to a couple of missed throws that could have changed things.

"I could have played better," Lock admitted to Mike Klis of 9News. "But, hit a couple of (deep) throws and might be feeling a little different. But that didn't happen and gotta learn from it and move on from this."

While Joe Flacco was brought in during the offseason as the starter, Lock's been viewed as the leader to fill the backup role while learning under the veteran. That's likely still the case for the Broncos, but the 22-year-old will have to make steady strides over the rest of the preseason to convince Fangio he's the man for the No. 2 job.
