Browns' Callaway banned 4 games for substance abuse
Cleveland Browns wide receiver Antonio Callaway will serve a four-game suspension to begin the regular season for violating the NFL's policy on substance abuse.
"I take full responsibility for my actions," Callaway said in a statement through the team. "I made a mistake and I own that. I have taken steps to make myself better and I appreciate the Browns standing by me and supporting me during this time. I know there's nothing I can say to regain trust; it will all be about my actions."
Callaway was battling Rashard Higgins in training camp for the No. 3 receiver spot behind Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry. The second-year wideout flashed talent throughout his rookie season and finished the campaign with 43 catches for 586 yards and five touchdowns.
Callaway, though, was considered a major character risk when the Browns drafted him in the fourth round last year. He was then arrested that summer for driving with a suspended license and possession of marijuana.
"We're disappointed in Antonio," Browns general manager John Dorsey said Friday.
"(Head coach) Freddie (Kitchens) and I have had a direct conversation with him about where we stand. He understands our expectations of him. We will continue to support him as long as he remains committed to taking advantage of the resources made available to him by our club and the league to help him become the best version of himself as a person first and foremost."
Callaway remains eligible to participate in all preseason practices and games. He'll return to the active roster in Week 5 before the Browns face the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football.
