Mara on Giants QBs: 'I hope Eli has a great year and Daniel never sees the field'
New York Giants president John Mara is making it clear who he wants to see behind center for his team this upcoming season.
When asked about his ideal vision for this year, Mara voiced his support for starting veteran quarterback Eli Manning over rookie Daniel Jones.
"I hope Eli has a great year and Daniel never sees the field," Mara said Tuesday, according to SNY's Ralph Vacchiano. "In an ideal world, you would like to see that. But at the end of the day, it's gonna be a decision by the head coach as to when, or if, Daniel ends up playing this year."
Mara also said that if Jones doesn't take a snap, it means the Giants are "having a great year and Eli's having a great year."
New York selected Jones sixth overall in April's draft. The rookie completed all five of his throws for 67 yards and a touchdown in his preseason debut.
Head coach Pat Shurmur said Jones' debut performance won't have an impact on who starts Week 1 of the regular season, although it was reported before camp that the team had already decided Manning would play behind center.
Even with Jones likely to ride the bench, Mara was impressed with the Duke product, stating: "He's everything we thought he would be."
