Video by @amivitale. Back by popular demand! Here is more of Mia and Emilka. Mia, the kitty had her tail bitten off by a different rhino when she was a little thing. But she persisted, kept her heart open, and one day found true love with a rhino named Emilka at Dvur Kralove @safariparkdvurkralove in the Czech Republic. This is the same place where the last northern white rhinos came from and they have been instrumental in saving species from the brink of extinction. @thephotosociety @natgeo #WorthMoreAlive #protectrhinos #DontLetThemDisappear #rhinos #saverhinos #stoppoaching #prague #czechrepublic #photojournalism #nikon #nikonambassador #natureisspeaking #catsofinstagram #catstagram #kitties #cat #amivitale

Photo by @amivitale. We are connected to one another and to all of life on this planet. I can recall the exact moment I understood how profound and true this is. It happened on a cold, snowy day in December 2009 in a town outside of Prague. It was on this day that I met a rhino named Sudan. And quite unexpectedly, he changed the way I see the world forever. When I got so close to him, I felt like I had just met a unicorn. He was otherworldly, larger than life and I recognized I was in the presence of a sentient, ancient creature. His species has been roaming the planet for millions of years and up until the last hundred years, there were possibly hundreds of thousands of them inhabiting the planet. On that day, there were only EIGHT of these rhinos alive and they were all in zoos. I was there because there was a plan to airlift four of these last eight Northern White Rhinos from the Dvur Kralove zoo in the Czech Republic back to Kenya. At first, I thought it was a story straight out of Disney cartoon but I quickly realized that this was a desperate, last ditch effort to save an entire species. This photo is the moment when Sudan sniffed the fresh air of his native Africa after coming from the @Safariparkdvurkralove. A year ago today, we said goodbye to Sudan who passed away of natural causes. He died surrounded by people who loved him at @olpejeta. In his death, he has become a wake up call for millions around the world. He has shown us that in a world of 7 billion, we need to recognize that we are not separate from nature. When we see ourselves as part of the landscape and part of nature, then saving nature is really about saving ourselves. For a contribution of just $10 to @olpejeta, you will be entered to WIN a personal photo safari with me for you and a guest to @OlPejeta Conservancy at @asiliaafrica's Ol Pejeta Bush Camp (#olpejetabushcamp). You will also win a @Nikonusa Z 6 and 24-70mm f/4 S lens to capture every unforgettable moment.
