San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo endured one of his worst-ever practices Wednesday, at one point committing five consecutive interceptions.

"He threw it to the wrong team five plays in a row," head coach Kyle Shanahan told Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle. "I was a defensive coach today, so I was pumped. But, no, the defense did great today and obviously, he struggled."

Garoppolo, who's been a full go at training camp following his recovery from a torn ACL, was competing against the Niners' defensive starters.

"You want so badly to make it up the next play, but the next play you've still got to make the right decisions and take what the defense gives you," Shanahan said of the five-pick stretch. "Sometimes it's hard to make the right decisions when you're fired up and competitive and usually when you make a bad play it makes your mind go a little bit sideways.

"So that's why it is sometimes a good situation to put guys in. When that does happen, sometimes you try to protect them a little bit in the game, but in practice, it's the exact opposite. When there's an issue, you kind of poke at it a little bit more to see how guys react."

Ironically, Garoppolo finished practice with a touchdown pass. He ended the session 12 of 25 overall.
