On the three-year anniversary of his first protest during the national anthem, Colin Kaepernick posted a powerful video on Twitter and shared that he continues to fight against oppression in the United States.

Today marks the three year anniversary of the first time I protested systemic oppression. I continue to work and stand with the people in our fight for liberation, despite those who are trying to erase the movement! The movement has always lived with the people! a3/4

Kaepernick began protesting by sitting on the bench during San Francisco 49ers preseason games in 2016 while the national anthem played. He then began kneeling during the anthem when the regular season kicked off, and a number of other NFL players followed suit shortly thereafter.

The quarterback hasn't played in the NFL since that campaign. He and former teammate Eric Reid filed a grievance against the league for collusion, and the two sides reached an agreement on a settlement in February.

A new policy regarding the anthem was initially passed by the NFL in May 2018 as a response to the protests but was put on hold amid controversy and subsequent discussions with the players' association.
