Though he remains optimistic a deal will get done, Dallas Cowboys CEO Stephen Jones said on Friday that contract talks with Ezekiel Elliott have been slow.

"I don't think we're close because there's not a lot of activity," Jones told 105.3 The Fan.

Elliott has spent all of training camp and the preseason in Mexico, where he's training independently while awaiting a new contract.

Through a retweet, the two-time Pro Bowler hinted that he wants to become the league's highest-paid running back. However, the Cowboys have been adamant about not resetting the market with any extension given to their core players.

Despite the lack of progress in negotiations, Jones said there's still a reasonable chance the Cowboys and Elliott could strike a deal before the team's season opener.

"We feel confident things will get done," he said. "Things happen real quick, sometimes within hours."

Dallas hosts the New York Giants in Week 1. Rookie Tony Pollard is expected to get the bulk of the action at running back if Elliott - a two-time rushing champion - carries his holdout into the regular season.
