Falcons, Julio 'very close' on new deal, could be finalized this week
The Atlanta Falcons appear to be nearing a new contract for star receiver Julio Jones.
Owner Arthur Blank said both parties are "very, very close" to a new deal.
"I'd be surprised and disappointed if we didn't get it done this week ... I think it's very reasonable to assume it will get done this week," according to The Athletic's Jeff Schultz.
Jones has been with the team and decided to attend training camp despite not having a long-term contract in place.
After threatening to hold out prior to the 2018 season, the Falcons assured Jones they would redo his contract and satisfied the six-time Pro Bowler with a temporary pay raise.
Earlier this offseason, the 30-year-old said he was given Blank's word that a new contract would be in place before the season.
Jones' new agreement is likely to eclipse Michael Thomas' five-year, $96-million contract, which would make him the highest-paid receiver in the NFL.
Jones' current deal runs through the 2020 campaign. Atlanta reached new agreements with defensive tackle Grady Jarrett and linebacker Deion Jones this offseason.
