headphone and mic jack not working

Hi! Linux Mint 19 installed on HP PC. Pc has two jacks: headphones only and headphones and mic. The second jack does not appear to work; in Pulse audio, as I plug in the headphones you can see some "noise" from the jack being inserted, but sound does not redirect to headphones; headphones show as "unplugged". Mic shows as "plugged in", but does not work.
