The Washington Redskins plan to make veteran running back Adrian Peterson inactive for Sunday's season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, according to Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.

Washington signed the 13-year pro to a two-year deal in March.

While discouraging news for the 34-year-old, it shows the team has confidence in second-year back Derrius Guice's return to health from a torn ACL last year. Guice is expected to be the lead back entering the season.

"I think the offense, carries wise, will probably go through him, pretty much," head coach Jay Gruden said this week.

Guice carried the ball 11 times for 44 yards, averaging four yards per carry, during the preseason.
