usb_modeswitch not working on Huawei E3531 dongle.

Hi, there's probably something very simple i'm missing here but i'm stuck.
I am using a Samsung chromebook 2 with Ubuntu 14.04 core (no desktop environment), and am trying to connect to a Huawei E3531 3G dongle with usb_modeswitch.
if i type 'lsusb' then it comes up with a list which includes the Huawei device with the identifier '12d1:1f01'.
usb modeswitch comes with a profile for that device, so i use that profile and it changes the device to '12d1:14dc', and says it worked.
the i type 'ip a' or 'ifconfig' or 'ls /sys/class/net' and the only thing there is 'lo' a local loopback that is always there.
how do I get it to show the dongle as a network?
thanks,
Eric.
