Crippling low internet speeds, that don't match up with speedtests

Hi,
I use slackware 14.2, in Australia. Speedtest.net gives me a nice, healthy 8 mb per second download speed, but in practice file downloads return 0.8 mb at best, at worst (specifically AlienBob's repositories) only 50kb. I'm not sure what configs to post, or if this is normal at all, considering this is Australia.
