Ubuntu file manager very, very slow when changing to a directory with pictures?

Ubuntu 18.04, Cinnamon. default file manager and Nemo.

When I switch to a folder that has lots of pictures the file managers

(Ubuntu file manager and Nemo) both slow to a crawl and take forever to

load. I end up having to kill them from console.

My system is not old or slow.

I avoid clearing the thumbnails cache to see if it helps but either way

does not seem to change anything. I have read it might be Cinnamon that

is the culprit.

Is there any way to speed up loading of pics?
