Image stitching horizontally & vertically

Good evening.

I have the supplement of a newspaper, which appeared at the end of 1967 with the review of that year. The whole supplement contains 8 pages in Din A-2 format.

I can scan all the pages as 4 images per page and need to stitch them together, afterwards. Hugin does not appear to support this kind of work, as panoramas are usually created by aligning pictures side by side. At least I am not getting anything done right with that program.

A first trial with The Gimp, by turning, clearing up, sharpening and the inverse, if needed, layers in order to adjust all four parts of a page, leaves me with a quite disappointing result.

Do you know a tutorial which covers this kind of image-manipulations?

There was a Windows-program called PhotoMagic in the 1990s which did exactly what I need. I give up, for now.
