Extension deprecated dialog cannot be removed from desktop

I run dual boot Ubuntu 18.04 LTS 64-bit and Windows 7 Home Premium, although I very rarely go into Windows anymore. Yesterday I was opening my Ubuntu Desktop Icons folder when the Desktop went crazy and my Desktop Icons disappeared. Then a dialog attached itself to the upper left of the screen with this message:

THIS EXTENSION IS FINALLY DEPRECATED
Switch to the official gnome-icons extension at:
https://extensions.gnome.org/extensi...desktop-icons/
It has reached a quite usable shape and has superseded this extension

I opened the suggested URL and it was no help. It told me it could not detect a running Gnome desktop and suggested that part of the interface might be disabled.

Inside the Deprecation dialog, two icons were installed. They do not open. All attempts to delete the dialog, failed. Rebooting would not make it go away.

I decided I would have to reinstall Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. I have my BIOS boot order set to boot first from the CD/DVD drive. No luck there either. GRUB overrides boot order priority and boots to the default Ubuntu.
