Eclipse IDE (java) not working with Fedora 30 or Mint Mate 19.1
by babysparrow from LinuxQuestions.org on (#4QHAZ)
Have been doing my yearly upgrades and found that Eclipse IDE no longer works on the latest Linux distros. I've tried using Both Fedora 30 and Linux Mint 19.1 and both fail. Fedora 30 takes 3 minutes to start and continues to run so slowly as to be useless. I've tried different desktop environments (Gnome3, LXDE, Mate, Cinnamon) and have tried Java8 and Java11. Linux Mint Mate fires up but then dies leaving a java thread hanging.
All I can see from the log files - and what would be my biggest suspicion anyway is compatibilty issues with GTK3 libraries. Nothing else in the logs grabs my attention. Eclipse can't be the only app with this type of issue (if GTK is indeed the reason).
Edit : I've also tried several versions of Eclipse (Neon, Oxygen3, 2019) which are known to work on my previous Linux installs (mint Sonya, Lubuntu) and Win7.
