Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was held out of practice on Tuesday after aggravating the foot that he sprained during the preseason, general manager Marty Hurney told Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic.

Hurney added that Newton has no timeline for a recovery and that he's considered day-to-day for now.

"We will see how it goes," Hurney said.

Kyle Allen, an undrafted quarterback in his second year, would likely start against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 3 if Newton can't play, according to Rodrigue. Allen played well in an inconsequential Week 17 win last year, putting up 266 yards and three total touchdowns. Third-round rookie QB Will Grier is also on the Panthers' roster.

Newton has missed time due to injury in two of the past three seasons after leading Carolina to a Super Bowl berth in 2015, when he was also named NFL MVP.

The former Heisman Trophy winner has tossed the third-most interceptions (44) in the league since that Super Bowl loss. This year, Newton has yet to throw a touchdown pass for the 0-2 Panthers.
