Remote desktop authentication issue

Followed these instructions to install x11vnc - https://linoxide (dot) com/linux-how-to/tools-enable-remote-desktop-access-rhel-centos-7/

Opened tcp port 5900 and 5901 in the linux firewall.

Went to my windows desktop, installed two different VNC software - tight and real vnc.

The VNC software connects to the linux server and I am prompted for a password. I enter the password entered during the server side install, and the password is rejected.

Went to the server, opened x11vnc, retyped the password, went back to the windows desktop, and still getting wrong password error.

Linux os is Centos 7.
This is on a home LAN.
Windows workstation can ping the Linux box

I am going to guess it has something to do with password encryption, but I am not sure where to check the server settings.

VNC software on the workstation is set to use server specified encryption.

Putty can connect to the linux server. I am able to log into the system using putty as root and run commands.
