Rhel repositories

I'm trying to understand more about managing software.
I have burned some software from my Windows pc and dropped them onto the Desktop of my Rhel machine. I have some repositories set up, but I'm having trouble downloading them.
I can't seem to find any rpms, and whenever I try to use yum it gives me the errno14 curl#37 error. I've tried to research what I'm doing wrong but I keep getting lost.
So my question is: does Rhel have to use repositories to manage software?
