Brees: 'I can beat' 6-week recovery timetable
New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees has spent his entire NFL career defying the odds, and he apparently intends to do so again with his thumb injury.
Brees is expected to be sidelined for around six weeks after undergoing surgery, but the future Hall of Famer believes he can return sooner than anticipated.
"As far as the timetable for getting back, though, they say six-to-eight weeks. I think I can beat that, but I'm just gonna take it one week at a time and see how things go," Brees said Wednesday on WWL Radio.
The 40-year-old explained that he opted for a procedure that inserts an internal brace to support the ligament, which will allow him to begin his rehabilitation sooner.
"It's something that immediately gives it strength and stability. And allows you to start rehab right away," said Brees. "You don't have to be immobilized. You don't have to be in a cast for a couple of weeks. You can start that rehab process right away, and it just fast-tracks the whole thing. It gives you that strength and stability while the ligament actually heals."
Brees added that he'll attend New Orleans' second game without him on Sunday, a prime-time matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.
Last week, Teddy Bridgewater led the Saints to a 33-27 win over the Seattle Seahawks.
