would a VM protect my computer from software's prying eyes?

If I had to run software from a company I don't trust, would running it in a virtual machine effectively isolate it from the files on my computer, preventing the software from accessing them if I didn't want it to?
My situation is simple enough. Regrettably, my new employer likes Google software, and it requires the use of Google Chrome in order to finish enrolling in retirement benefits, saying Mozilla (or presumably a Mozilla-type browser--I use Pale Moon) won't work on the benefits website. I've been trying to get away with Pale Moon, but not using their required browser might explain why the password-reminder screen refuses to e-mail me a reset link like it's supposed to.
I hope I can find time to take care of that at work; but if I'm too busy and have to handle it after work, I face the prospect of having to install Chrome, and I've avoided Chrome. I want nothing further to do with Google software. I was hoping I could wall off the rest of my computer from Chrome--yes, I'm that paranoid about those people.
I wouldn't have had much objection to installing Chrome on an old Windows netbook I have; but I can't find the power supply...
