A contract extension for Dallas Cowboys signal-caller Dak Prescott will not be done in the near future, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The report comes a few weeks after Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said that a deal with his Pro Bowl quarterback was "imminent." However, that was never actually the case, which means this newest development should not be seen as a setback in negotiations, per Schefter.

After locking up a handful of key players this offseason, it would seem the Cowboys are happy to watch Prescott play out the year and negotiate a new deal after the season.

The Cowboys, for their part, have the option of tagging the Mississippi State product next year if no new collective bargaining agreement is reached.

According to Schefter, it's no secret Prescott wants to be in Dallas and vice versa, leaving little doubt a deal will eventually get done.

The pride of Sulphur, Louisiana has been a big part of the Cowboys' 3-0 start, leading the league in completion percentage (74.5) while sitting behind only Patrick Mahomes in passing touchdowns (9) and passer rating (128.0).
