nodejs installation - npm directory structure

I have a tiny question. I installed nodejs 10x and I'm confused about the directory structure. During the installation the node modules were installed to:

Code:/usr/lib/node_modules/npm/node_modulesto me this seems too many levels deep. Is this structure correct? If so, what would cause it to happen?
