Jay Gruden: I'll keep coming to work 'if the key works Monday'

The Washington Redskins and their head coach have endured a tough start to the 2019 campaign, to say the least.

Washington lost again in Week 5, falling 33-7 to the New England Patriots and dropping to 0-5 on the season. The loss didn't help head coach Jay Gruden cool down his hot seat.

"If the key works Monday I'll keep working," said Gruden postgame, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The Redskins' Chris Thompson fought back tears after the contest when speaking about Gruden's future, saying the 52-year-old gave the running back his shot in the league as an undersized fifth-round pick.

The heat of Gruden's seat intensified when he threw rookie signal-caller Dwayne Haskins into the fire midway through the team's Week 4 blowout loss to the Giants. The decision came after the head coach said earlier in the week that the rookie wasn't ready to play yet.

Adding to his troubles, several social media videos featuring Gruden surfaced this past week showing him smoking an unidentified substance and chatting with a young woman.

Gruden has been the Redskins' head coach since 2014, amassing a 35-48-1 record with one playoff berth. The former Arena Football League MVP was previously the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals from 2011 to 2013.
