Need guidance debugging Linux Audio on a laptop with Fedora 30

Hello!

After much reading, I just have to accept that I am unable to solve this problem by myself, and I am seeking a kind soul that can provide guidance and advice.

The problem:
There is no sound coming out of the laptop's speakers and/or headphones connected to the audio jack. Usually there is sound from bluetooth speakers.

The catch:
"Usually" means that the exact symptoms vary depending on the current kernel (as far as I can tell, perhaps the symptoms also depend on other factors as well). With some kernel versions I don't hear anything even over bluetooth. With some others (like 5.2.14), the speakers work after most boots.

The reason I am writing:

I can't even backtrack the problem and pinpoint its origin. I get lost in the documentation and troubleshooting guides out there (Is it ALSA? Is it PulseAudio? Is it something else? How do I tell?)

The hardware:

A very new laptop with Fedora 30 (Cinnamon spin), integrated Intel graphics and an NVIDIA GPU. The problems seem to start after the installation of the NVIDIA proprietary drivers, but I cannot tell for certain. The laptop has an audio jack AND an infrared jack which is always on in Linux (not if I boot into Windows!). In fact, there are no audio problems in Windows at all.

I would very much appreciate guidance in:
  1. Understanding where the problem is.
  2. Squashing the bug or whatever is causing the problem for good.
