gthumb - show directories; Nemo - show thumbnails but not have a thumbnail-cache.

I am using Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa Cinnamon, gthumb 3.2.7, and Nemo 2.8.7.
Gthumb
gthumb is very good, unlike Nemo never freezes for half-an-hour when moving images or has any errors with a thumbnail cache. I wish it could be further developed to become a general file manager.
My question: Is there any way to get gthumb to show an icon for a sub-directory when in thumbnail-view mode (or any other view mode)? You can always go up to the parent directory, but I am not aware of any way of going down. Sub-directories are never shown.
Nemo
My guess is that the problems with Nemo are due to the thumbnail cache, as the problems disappear for a while when I use BleachBit to delete the cache. (Sidepoint - I like the large thumbnails, but dislike the tiny utterly useless images, about 2mm by 3mm on my computer, that are shown in list view.)
Question: Is there any way to stop Nemo creating a thumbnail cache yet still be able to see large thumbnails? I am happy to wait while the computer creates the images from the actual files rather than from a cache.
Footnote - humble begging of gthumb developers
Wikipedia says recent versions of gthumb are beginning to use a thumbnail cache. May I beg that using one is given as an option that the user can opt out of, for reasons above?
