Learning programming and understanding why

Hi all,
I'm trying to help a friend.
He wants to learn programming, mainly python and javascript. He likes to understand why certain things are done in a certain way and not another. But that not how programming is taught today.
I ask here because many linux users also like to understand why.
Do you have any resources for this? He's a complete beginner so don't give me heavy stuff please.
