Ubuntu Server 18.04 LTS: external USB HDD no longer spining down after upgrade from Ubuntu Server 14.04 LTS

Hi there,

I recently upgraded (fresh install) my Ubuntu Server from 14.04 LTS to 18.04 LTS - Hardware is a Zotac ZBOX CI321 Nano and I have an external USB HDD (Western Digital Elements Desktop 5TB) connected to the server.

With 14.04 the external drive was always going into standby/sleep mode after being idle for a short while. This always worked by default after Ubuntu Server installation, I never had to tweak anything...

Now, since I moved to 18.04, the external drive is no longer going to sleep. I have tried stopping running services, executing hdparm with the -S, -y or -Y option and even unmounting the disk, but nothing helps, it stays active/idle permanently :banghead:

I have also monitored drive usage with atop and iotop, and, as far as I can see, nothing is accessing (read/write) the drive...

Any clues?

Did anything change on 18.04 w.r.t. these power management features?

I look forward to your feedback!

Many thanks in advance! :hattip:latest?d=yIl2AUoC8zA latest?i=-ozHSFgR5BU:MHRUoXBPUn8:F7zBnMy latest?i=-ozHSFgR5BU:MHRUoXBPUn8:V_sGLiP latest?d=qj6IDK7rITs latest?i=-ozHSFgR5BU:MHRUoXBPUn8:gIN9vFw-ozHSFgR5BU
