Report: NFLPA open to expanding regular season to 17 games
The NFL Players Association is willing to discuss expanding the regular season from 16 games to 17 with team owners as part of the league's new collective bargaining agreement, sources told ESPN's Dan Graziano.
However, the players' support is reportedly contingent on their share of the NFL's revenue increasing sufficiently.
The owners' proposal is for the expansion to begin in 2022. It would include reducing the preseason to three games, according to Graziano.
Players were reportedly unsatisfied with the owners' most recent revenue-split proposals, and now the league and the NFLPA are in the midst of arranging a formal meeting on the matter for the near future.
The unexpected cost of the new stadium in Los Angeles is reportedly a key issue for the two parties to overcome in revenue-split negotiations. The stadium is expected to cost over double the initial estimate of $2.5 billion.
Owners reportedly want to designate revenue credits that would be taken off the top for stadium costs, and players fear they could be taken advantage of in that system.
