A Chromebook's Linux Distro Potential?

Hello all,

While fascinated by a new HP 15 Chromebook, gifted to me, I keep using my familiar & only other PC: a "seen better days" Win7 based, 4GB RAM quad-core laptop, running Mint Cinnamon solely.

This new Chromebook: HP model 15-de0021cl, both fascinates and upsets me at the same time.

As sleek and 'nifty' as it is, since I first installed Ubuntu as a dual-boot on the old PC years ago, I've really never looked back.

I (at least now) fall under the newbie category, as it's been awhile since I've so much as opened terminal, though I do manage my way around once determined enough. I've had some programming skills -- past tense -- from back in the 1980s, but after opening a couple of compilers more recently (C, Pascal..even BASIC) I realized I may need to re-define newbie.

Is it possible that I've been using Linux for many of the things Chromebooks are intended for?

Enough of my life story. Is this a device that I should just dedicate more time learning, or can I get Cinnamon or anything remotely close up and running on it? I understand this sort of question has been asked, but I am just plain overwhelmed by information.

I suspect that I'm behind the times in just too many of these matters.

I sure would appreciate any insights into this situation.
