Chargers fire OC Whisenhunt amid 3-5 start

The Los Angeles Chargers relieved offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt of his duties on Monday, the team announced.
Moving forward, quarterbacks coach Shane Steichen will call the plays for the Chargers, though head coach Anthony Lynn will be heavily involved, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
The Chargers, a team that entered the season with Super Bowl aspirations, have stumbled to a 3-5 start and sit in third place in the AFC West.
"This is not an easy decision and definitely not one that I take lightly," said Lynn. "You win as a team, and you lose as a team. It's never about just one person.
"At the end of the day, however, I simply felt a change was needed at this time. I want to thank Ken for his years of service to the Chargers organization and wish him nothing but the best moving forward."
Despite boasting talents like veteran quarterback Philip Rivers and wide receiver Keenan Allen, the Chargers' offense has struggled to live up to its potential.
Through eight weeks, the club ranks 23rd in scoring (19.6 points per game) and 28th in rushing (69.5 yards per game). The Chargers have also recorded 13 giveaways, tied for ninth in the league.
In 2018, L.A. averaged 26.8 points and 117.1 rushing yards per game.
Whisenhunt had been Los Angeles' OC since 2016. He also held the same title with the Chargers in 2013 before leaving to become the head coach of the Tennessee Titans.
